Diane: Can you tell me something about yourself?
Rebecca: My
husband and I wrote a screenplay years ago, and it wasn’t until 2012 that I
self-published my first book,
Messages from Henry. I have since self-published five other books: Rag
Doll, Jumper, Where Love Takes You, Jumper Bounces Back, and Jumper Meets Bouncy.
Diane: It’s
easy to see you have been a very busy author, Rebecca. So, what inspired you to
write children’s books?
Rebecca: I
never really planned on writing children’s picture books. The idea for Jumper
came about when a red beach ball blew out of a bin full of balls, in front of a
general store. As my husband drove down the road, the red ball followed us. All
the way home my husband told me what the ball might do, see, and say. I didn’t
use any of his ideas. I wrote my own version weeks later.
Diane: Having
had the pleasure of reading the Jumper series, it is easy to see why children enjoy your stories. Can
I ask what marketing technique has worked the best for you?
Rebecca:
I’ve gotten the best results by chatting with people on Twitter, and meeting
the public. I’ve sold more of my children’s paperback books out of my vehicle
than anywhere else.
Diane: Would
you tell me something about your latest book?
Rebecca: Jumper Meets Bouncy is the third book in my series of children’s books. I loved
writing this book for many reasons. One of the reasons is that one of the
protagonists, three-year-old Tony no longer talks baby talk. And with Jumper, a
red beach ball, meeting and talking to another ball; I had a lot of fun! Haha!
Jumper has a girlfriend.
Diane: Sounds
like quite an adventure. I’d be interested to know how long it took you to
write it?
Rebecca: I’d
say it took me a little over one month to write and edit Jumper
Meets Bouncy.
Diane: Goodness,
you must have been totally committed to writing this children’s book to do it
so quickly. Can I ask you about your writing process and do you have a set time
for writing?
Rebecca: I
have a pad of paper and pen next to my bed. I also carry a pad of paper when I
leave home. I wake up all hours of the night and write down story ideas. As far
as actually typing my stories, I do so all hours of the night and day.
Diane: Did
you need to do any research, or was there anything else of interest that was
involved in creating this story?
Rebecca: The
research I’ve done for the children’s series involved questioning parents on Twitter,
and googling children’s favorite games, favorite toys, and favorite outdoor
activities.
Diane: Interesting…
And what do you think young readers will come away with when they have finished
reading your children’s book series?
Rebecca: I
think children’s imagination will be enhanced. I doubt they’ll ever look at
their beach balls as just balls ever again. Many parents and grandparents have
told me that their children and grandchildren now want a red beach ball. They
also want birthday parties just like Emily and Tony had. Oh! And they want
Jumper on television. That just might happen one day, but I’m not holding my
breath.
Diane: A big thank you for sharing a
bit about yourself with me and my readers. I also wish you every success with this
new and exciting Children’s Book.
I want to thank you
for having me on your blog. I’ve enjoyed answering your questions. I think
you’re a brilliant author, and I wish you the best!
Here’s a short excerpt
from Jumper Meets Bouncy:
Boomf! We bounced right down into the
panda’s habitat, and both of us ended up next to one another by some rocks.
Emily’s ball looked at me with fear in her eyes.
“Hello. My
name is Jumper. What’s your name?”
She batted
her long lashes and looked over at me.
“Hello, they
call me The Beach Ball, but Bouncy Brianna is my real name.
“I’ll call
you Bouncy for short if you don’t mind.”
“I don’t
mind at all. I see ‘Tony’ written on you.”
“Yeah, Tony
insisted that his mother write his name on me. I hope somebody gets us out of
here soon. That might be a baby panda, but I saw her teeth and claws. This
could be dangerous.”
Bouncy’s
eyes filled with tears, and I wished that I hadn’t said that.
